How to Create a Quick, Easy and Good Looking Background Pattern

How to Create a Quick, Easy and Good Looking Background Pattern

As a web designer myself, a problem I often encounter is creating a good looking background for my web design project. I found the best way to do this was to use a repeated background pattern, however, they can still be very difficult to create. Luckily  I recently discovered a brilliant little website called “BgPatterns“.

BG Patterns

BgPatterns allows users to create good looking patterns easily and quickly, plus it’s completely free, still, you can leave a donation to the developer if you so wish. There are a number of other services out there, that offer something quite similar, however, I believe this is the best. Here is our simply guide to creating a great looking pattern with BgPatterns…

First head over to BgPatterns.com to get started. From here, you’ll need to select the colours for your pattern. You’ll need to choose two colours in total, a foreground and background. I’d recommend choosing two colours that correspond with the design of the rest of your website, otherwise, just experiment with various coulours. Furthermore, you’ll need to select the texture of your canvas, which is purely personal preference I found. At this current time, there is only five texture options to choose from and they’re all pretty similar.

On the next tab, you’ll need to select the image you wish to be featured in your pattern and it’s properties. The best option to go with is to find an image in the collection that is relevant to the purpose of your website. If no such image exists, your best option therefore is just to select a simple shape. From here, you can also select the location, scale and opacity of the image. So, it’s best just to play around with these options.

The final tab will allow you to alter the rotation of your image. This is presented nicely through a circle shape that allows you to change which direction your pattern will face.

Your background pattern is now complete. On the right hand side of the screen, you can choose to preview your newly created pattern on the page or to download it as a PNG file. This new image can be used in your website’s design and you have a beautiful looking background pattern that took you well under 5 minutes to make.
