When you’re just starting out in the blog world, one of the main things that you will want to do is to make sure that you’re getting the most visitors that you possibly can be. With this in mind, it can help to get to grips with some of the fundamentals of blogging to encourage traffic to your blog where possible.
A lot of blogs don’t seem to have any kind of regular pattern to them, and this is something that will damage their traffic in the long term. Nobody wants a blog that is only updated once a year, or a blog that isn’t updated for months and then suddenly gets lots of posts in a matter of hours. If you plan when you’re going to blog, it will improve your chances of success. Every week, or twice a week, is usually good. That way you are able to get into a routine, and your readers will know exactly what they can expect of you.
Keep on topic
It can be tempting, when running a blog, to start talking about the things that interest you in your personal life, when that might not be what you made your blog about. When this is the case, you will find that your readers may lose interest, because they’re just not interested in everything that you’re talking about. If your blog is about cupcakes, for example, it is an unwise idea to start talking about how you’re training your dog.
This is an important trick when you’re blogging, and it’s something that will serve you well in the long term. A lot of the time, your readers will first find your blog from something that they have searched on the internet. Going back to the cupcakes; if they are looking for a recipe, they might search “easy cupcake recipes” or “how to decorate cupcakes”. If you have included these exact words, and others like them, that might be included in their search terms, then there is a much better chance that you are going to get visitors to your website.
Build relationships with your readers
One thing that will make people come back to your blog over and over again is if you take the time to let them get involved in what you’re talking about, and really include them in your blogs. For example, you might find that it would go down well if you were to invite them to send you their own recipes, and this means that they will then check back to see if theirs have been chosen to appear on the blog. Competitions also encourage visitors to keep posting, and if the competition is to send as many people as they can to your blog then this is another thing that will increase your traffic.
In general, you need to be doing everything that you can not only so that you can encourage new readers to come to your blog, but also so that you can make your current ones really want to stay. It is an investment into your blog that is more than worth it in the long term.
