The Unlimited Web space and Unlimited Bandwidth Myth

The Unlimited Web space and Unlimited Bandwidth Myth

When I looked at the YWB web hosting package it appeared that the only negative was that they weren’t offering unlimited bandwidth and unlimited web space.

But i quickly realised that this was an advantage, because people who offer “unlimited everythng”, were effectively showing that they were liars and I know YWB doesn’t want to be in that camp.

Here is why people who offer unlimited webspace and unlimited bandwidth are liars and I would like to prove this by a little conversation I had with a web hosting provider about 8 years ago.

So the guy says to me “Come and purchase our hosting package, you get unlimited bandwidth and unlimited web space and all for the price of $3.95 per month”.

So I say, “will i be able to move my website over to your server?” “Does the price allow me to do that?”.

So the guy says “yes of course, we will even help you to do that”.

So i say, “ok, I have over 10 million pages on my server and I get over 12 million unique visitors a month and that’s rising all the time”.

I then hear a pause and the guy starts talking about dedicated server options and pretty soon I’m being charged about $20K a month to cover my needs.

So next time someone says you can have unlimited bandwidth and unlimited web space for $3.95, look them in the eyes and say “no thank you”.

There is an old saying “there is no such thing as a free lunch”.

Unlimited bandwidth and unlimited web space is at best a ruse to get you to buy hosting and at worst the biggest con on the web.

By the way, i was assessing the hosting costs for a very well known website indeed.

It was actually for  Working for the BBC website, you can imagine me reporting back, we’ve cut the costs of our web hosting! It’s only going to be $3.95PM.

For the record, 20,000 unique hits per month takes up about 15-40GB bandwidth, a website for a local sports centre receiving 1000 unique hits per month would not even take up 1GB, of course dependant on the content that you are hosting.
